In recent decades, our society has consistently explored new materials and construction methods. Sometimes driven by problem-solving, other times seeking cost savings, occasionally aiming for environmental sustainability, or simply inspired by personal curiosity. Not all endeavors have yielded replicable ideas, but this spirit of exploration remains vital today. At times, we have adopted foreign practices, such as concrete technology, which arrived from Europe significantly after our independence. Within just fifty years, it has revolutionized construction practices across India, reshaping centuries-old building traditions.
Despite India being the world’s third-largest producer of steel, the adoption of building with steel is still trying to gain traction in the country. Unlike in the U.S. and Europe where public buildings commonly feature structural steel, in India, such usage is largely limited to industries and temporary shelters. Although steel is utilized in construction processes, such as in reinforced concrete or occasional beams, the widespread use of structural steel columns, beams, floor plates, staircase supports, and similar elements in entire buildings is not yet common.
